Dragon Ball Z Kai The Final Chapters Part One

DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:

Finally completed Dragon Ball Kai Collection. It took a couple years but eventually happened. To be honest though, I feel that “The Last Chapters” was a very lazy release compared to original 8 parts. Each of the last chapter parts contain 23 episodes per set and about $5 more than a season set. It seems funimation took way too long to start dubbing these sets and ended up deciding to release each set one month apart from each other before those episodes even played on tv. This review will be divided in Packaging, Picture, Sound and Special Features.

The Packaging:
The packaging is pretty standard, 3 disc set, however I find the labelling to be a little silly. It starts at part one but the episode count starts at 99. Would it have killed them to just continue onto part 9. It may however to Toei animations fault, as they decided that the international market must call it “The Final Chapters”. The packaging is also not in line with the Original Dragon Ball Z Kai releases. I would have preferred this to be released in 4 parts to match the original set – Part 1 to 4 Saiyan/Freeza Arc, Part 5 to 8 Android/Cell Arc, Part 9 to 12 Majin Boo Arc.

The Picture:
The picture is in 16×9 sadly, this is due to the fact that Toei Animation decided to remaster it in-house for the Boo Arc instead of using Q-TEC like they did for the Original 8 Parts. This now also does not match the original 8 parts, Toei Animation sadly made the decision to release it this way to the local and international market. I don’t know why people feel the need to crop this show constantly. Overall the image quality is much better than the DBZ Blu-rays.

The Sound:
The Sound quality is excellent, Both the English and Japanese Dub are great, I can’t decided which one I like more. English is in 5.1 and Japanese is in 2.0.

The Special Features:
These Sets don’t offer much in the way of special features. Just Trailers and maybe one episode with the voice over commentary.

Overall Conclusion:
It is still a very good release, Dragon Ball Z Kai is still the best way to watch the series. It cuts down on filler, the pacing is way better, both dubs are top notch and lets be honest, this is not like DBZ where you have tons of sets to choose from.

Please Note:
These sets are region A only, unlike the Original 8 parts which were region A and B. So if you are importing, make sure you have a Region A player. I recommend getting yourself a blu-ray drive for your PC, and using the software PowerDVD or Macgo Blu-ray player. PowerDVD lets you change your Blu-ray region code and Macgo doesn’t care about region codes.

Finally the final story arc of the original Dragon Ball Z anime has finally got the kai treatment. I’m satisfied what I’ve seen so far though the only thing I have to complain about is I feel like the soundtrack is out of place for the world of Dragon Ball not only that the episode count for the kai version of the Buu saga isn’t that much different from the original. However if you prefer English dubs for anime than this will be a treat because you can now watch all of Dragon Ball in the way it was intended in English and forget the original dub for Dragon Ball Z ever existed.-Darksnovia

This season started off kind of lame but i like how the story works it’s way towards the buu sage. I knew what it was when those two bad eggs who both had the big m on their foreheads, i can’t remember their names, but when they started draining gohan’s energy into that container, i knew what it was. This was the saga i wanted to see when i started watching kai seven year’s ago, this is it.-Arden Taylor
