How I Met Your Mother Season 9
DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:
Throw away the Playbook for good! In the series’ hilarious final season, you’re invited to Barney and Robin’s epic wedding weekend, and we get to know Ted’s — wait for it — “The One”!
Where to begin…. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE I know who watched HIMYM hated this season. I tend to disagree with many TV/movie ratings, however, they were dead on. Probably about 80% of the scenes were shot in 4 or 5 different dull, drab rooms, such as no-decoration bedrooms, lobbies and an action-less bar. It lacks all of the fun skits/excursions and character interactions that made seasons 1-8 truly legendary. The mother is barely in the season at all and you don’t get her name until the last episode which is a crying shame because she’s fantastic in the episodes she’s in. But wait *Spoiler Alert* rather than have a happy ending showing Ted get what he’s been searching for during the whole show in an epic triumph, let’s go kill off the mother after she has the kids and have Ted end up marrying Robin instead (well, this is implied). Seriously???? This is supposed to be “how I met your MOTHER” not “how I ended up marrying Robin”. If you do buy this don’t bother watching the original aired final episode, just watch the alternate one unless you want to see how horrible my spoilers play out in front of the camera. Lastly, it felt like they just tried to take another 6-8 episodes’ worth of story and cram it into the last 2 episodes on top of what was already there. Very poorly written. If I watch my dvd’s again I will quit at season 8. Season 9 has no re-watch value at all.

I love the way this series balanced sitcom silliness with serious drama. The flashforwards/flashbacks provided character depth I’ve never seen before on television. I really like the show, but the ending was a letdown for me. After years of complex plotlines and character development, it’s as if all the writers quit last season – and a new batch were hired for the finale.
For 8 seasons they stuck with the tried-and-true storyline that brought viewers in, and befuddled us trying to figure out who “Mother” is. Wasn’t that always the question on everyone’s mind? Ted was the guy we all pulled for, we laughed and cried at his fruitless attempts at true love. And then there’s Robin, who also got more strikeouts than hits. It seemed natural (to me) that the two of them would end up together. But, all the references to “Aunt Robin” pretty much put the kibosh on that. She was not Mother, just another failed attempt.
OK – I accepted that and moved on. Even bought into the premise that Robin and Barney would marry. Oooh…you sonovabeech! What a sap I was – that marriage thing was a setup. I would have preferred that Robin just went away, and returned at the very end – but I do get the connection between her life story and Ted’s. So why not title the show “How I Met Your Hot Aunt”?
I was delighted when mother was finally revealed. Can’t think of a better match for Ted than Tracey. Simply perfect. But alas – we hardly hardly knew her. Like a two-bit documentary, most of their life together was portrayed in quickie snippets, still photos, and a handful of poignent scenes (the train platform was awesome). Really now – you just kill her off and move on? This is hardly the ending such a story deserves.
In the end, I’m left struggling to understand what message the writers were trying to deliver.
True love is an illusion?
If you can’t be with the one you love, love the one you’re with?
The other man’s grass is always greener?
You don’t know what you got ’til it’s gone?
Ted smoked too much dope in college?
I dunno, maybe it’s all of the above. I just think that the story (and the excellent cast) was short-changed by this ending. Not to mention the audience. In spite of all that, it’s still a must-see for any mother-lover. A great series that will continue to entertain for a long, long time.

At long last, and it’s very good. I love that Josh Radnor was the ONLY ONE WHO KNEW, from the very beginning, how it would end. It’s emotional because it’s hard to say good-bye to the characters you’ve grown to love so much… even Barney, who has a wonderful ending. Or is it beginning? Throughout the run of the show, the writer/creator team would say that it is somewhat based on their own lives. Well, now that I’ve seen it all, I hope is is VERY loosely based on their lives. Mostly, I’ve so enjoyed their antics for nine seasons, making me laugh out loud and cry at the sappy parts. I don’t think you have to watch from the beginning to understand an episode, so if you see one in the middle, you’re probably fine. But to truly appreciate the arc these people go on (and the writers along with them), you should start with the first episode and watch them all. Because it’s legen… wait for it….
