Director Wes Anderson takes his unique talents and vision and invents a stop-motion animated Japan where a city’s dogs have been exiled to an outlying island. A 12-year boy sneaks onto the island to find his dog and remind the viewers of the special link between humanity and canines. The animation is sophisticated but harkens back to traditional Japanese art styles. The dialogue for the humans are mostly in Japanese while the dogs are in English – providing a glimpse of how canines view our relationship. It is far more touching with greater depth than expected – one of Wes Anderson’s trademarks. If you have a dog, know a dog, or want a dog – this is a wonderful movie not to be missed.-James Wink

I’ve read over two dozen of the existing reviews, in all five (star) categories, and not one of them mentions that this film can be understood on more than the obvious level. I found all sorts of analogies to U.S. and world problems. I expect that the poor reviews come from people who lack a sense of irony or who have not been paying attention to the (real, not slanted) news. This is a very interesting work, as animation, as multilevel fable and as satire. Not for everyone, of course, but definitely five stars.- birdwalker

Love, love, love this movie. Funny, touching, great voice work by Cranston, Goldblum and Norton. Maybe best for ages 10 and up because there are a lot of subtitles. The humans speak Japanese and the dogs speak English.- Utah Mike
