Legion Season 1

DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:

There are not that many television shows that reward DVD purchases immediately, but “Legion” does. The DVD set has minimal extras — no actor or director commentaries at all and only a few production promos tacked on. At only a few episodes, the disk set seems expensive. However, the visual density of the show is incredible. Noah Hawley deserves a great deal of the credit he is receiving, but he was not the director for most of the episodes, and the producers/directors did phenomenal work. Needless to say, the special effects are extraordinary, but these are meaningless without a vision to integrate them, and that’s what “Legion” has. Whether it is dance or 1960’s/1970’s rock or Futurist or Futurism fashion (1920’s vs. 1960’s), all of the pieces are synthesized and not a pastiche. In the hands of other shows and directors, the effect is like going into a theme restaurant, where ‘nick nacks’ are plastered on the walls without intent or effect. In “Legion,” there is an aesthetic, and that’s worth looking at as well as watching.

There is so much to love about this show that it is difficult to know where to start. Dan Stevens’s performance is incredible and different from what I have seen him do before. I won’t sing the praises of any other actors so as not to spoil the story line (trust me, you don’t want to know how many episodes some of the actors are in, so stay away from the IMDB page until you’ve finished the season). But I will confess that I cheered out loud (and very inappropriately, given the events on the screen) at the end of the penultimate episode when a certain fantastic character appeared who I had not expected to see again.

The writing is great, too. Both the dialogue and the story itself. The show is visually beautiful, and definitely does not suffer from the oppressive sameness in palette that afflict other Marvel shows/movies.

Yes, this does take place in the Marvel universe. But the only time I was reminded of this fact was at the end of the show when the big red screen with MARVEL on it popped up. Otherwise, it barely feels like a show based in a comic book universe. Yes, there are many characters running around with mutant/super powers. But those powers aren’t used to solve problems faster/better than a normal human could solve them. Rather, those powers are used to fashion a world that is recognizable but distinct from our own, in which we are given a taste of how many people in our own world might be experiencing life everyday.

I have already re-watched several episodes and I look forward to re-watching the entire season at least once before season 2. Great job, Baranskis!

I got into the show recently and after getting recommendations from friends I saw the first episode and was hooked plus I love the backstory in the comics with Legion being Xavier’s son and it would be great to see him next season. The characters are dynamic and bold, the directors and writers have done an amazing job giving us a visionary show like this to enjoy. I am now re-watching the episodes with my husband who is loving it as well as he is into this stuff anyway. The Shadowking is the perfect villain and Dan Stevens has taken this role and made it his own in every way. I could not really see anyone else doing it now. The other actors are superb as well. I love the way the writers and directors have utilized such a massive amount of symbolism and color effects to depict the two different sides of David. I even noticed more hints when I re-watched it, as you can see X’s and O’s everywhere and the dog becoming the angry boy, to Lenny and the Shadowking worked really well! Amazing show and cannot wait for next season!! We need more shows like this one!
