Mr. Mercedes Season 1
DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:
First, please note that none of the negative reviews thus far have to do with the content of the series.
Yeah, they ran out of stock. I preordered my copy a month ahead and still received it late. It was a bummer but oh well, first world problems. I think Amazon probably had a ton of copies but because this was available only through DirecTV a whole lotta people ordered the DVD.
ANYWAY, on to the actual review.
What a pleasure, a treat, to watch this series! I pictured Gleeson from the very beginning of the books and couldn’t believe that is also who King pictured and we are actually graced with in this show. Pinch me! The casting of all the originsl characters feels like ordination. Kelly Lynch brings so much more depth and sympathy to her character than what I got from the pages of the book. Treadaway is perfectly cast as Gleeson’s foil and also plays his character more sympathetically than in the book. Throughout the show you can see more of a tragedy to his psychopathy- and his sometimes likable side is best displayed in his interactions with his co-worker Lou (yet another character given more dialogue and texture than in the novel). I was also so thrilled Justine Lupe’s performance as Holly, a character I have much affection for. She was smartly cast, being younger than her character so as to manifest the character’s arrested development.
Aside from the cast we have David E. Kelly at the helm and Dennis Lehane as a producer, this is smart storytelling and writing manna from heaven.
The show is largely faithful to the first book. I appreciate some of the changes that make the show really its own. The tone is more somber than the novel, in my opinion, but no less enjoyable. It’s also fun to see how the inner monologues of the characters are translated on screen without voice over. The editing and cinematography is creative and very effective in moments I won’t spoil. The opening credits are pretty neat as well as is GREAT use of the seemingly beat-to-death needle drop style soundtrack that is trendy in movies as of late.
My ONLY gripe with the show was the addition of Ida Silver. She wasn’t in the book and doesn’t feel useful to story in any way
It’s unfortunate because Holland Taylor does a great job as always, but the role is gratuitous and frankly, annoying.
Anyway, watch it. You shouldn’t be disappointed.

Just finished the first season of Stephen King’s “Mr. Mercedes” – an AT&T original now on DVD. AWESOME!! This new King release is right on. Led by the stellar acting of Brendan Gleason as the retired cop obsessed with finding a monster-of-a-killer, this is riveting, lots of twists and can only get better as I delve deeper into the story. It is based on King’s book of the same name. The first two episodes are of character development. In addition to Gleason, Harry Treadaway, Mary Louise-Parker and Holland Taylor are perfectly cast. If you’re a King fan, don’t miss it. That’s why King has earned the named of the master of horror. Bring on Season 2!!!!

This is a great show! Realistic in many ways, warm due to the connection with each cast member. I felt like I was in this show the whole time, thrilling!
Story is an unusual one. Disturbing to say the least, you will see. Stephen King is a mastermind! Best story teller of all time! Can’t resist saying these mini-series describing King’s work is revolutionary.
Well known cast involved here. I recognized members from “Hannibal” & “Fortitude” + others from times can’t remember. For what it’s worth.
Very strong recommendation to watch this show! WARNING – it has a low print run for unknown reasons. May take a while to get one. Sorry but true.Unfortunate. Patience is the key
