Shameless Season 8

DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:

Shameless‘ Season 8 premiere on Sunday finds the clan making positive choices — albeit with the help of drugs in some cases.

As you may recall, each family member inherited a bag of meth after their mom Monica’s death last season. Now Carl has been tasked with selling the drugs for his siblings, who put their influx of cash to use in very different ways.

Let’s review what the Gallaghers (and their friends) are up to and what they did with their “Monica money”:

Shameless RecapFIONA
Monica Money Purchase | None. She buried her and Liam’s share of meth alongside Monica’s dead body.
What’s New | Someone’s finally had enough of meaningless sex with anonymous men: Fiona declares that she’s closing her Tinder account. She wants a connection and shared interests instead. But until she finds that special guy, she’s focusing on her new gig as a landlord, fixing up the apartment building she bought and making friends with one of the tenants (played by Gossip Girl‘s Jessica Szohr). Everyone thinks she’s crazy to charge $850 for rent in the “s—thole” building. Well, joke’s on them, because two prospective tenants actually start a bidding war for the space, and Fiona ends up getting $1,000.

We’ve watched Lip (Jeremy Allen White) attempt to destroy his life almost entirely for the past two seasons of Shameless, but it seems like things are starting to look up — at least for now.

When we picked up with the Gallaghers for Season 8, Lip was maintaining his sobriety. He’s landed two jobs, one as a mechanic and the other as a busboy at Patsy’s Diner. His sponsor checked in on him regularly and gave him tips to fight the urges when he felt like he needed a drink to get by.

The problem, as it almost always has been for Lip, is the girls. Lip’s heart still belongs to Sierra (Ruby Modine), and he made some pretty extreme choices for her instead of focusing on himself. Sierra has moved on, or backwards, to her ex in order to give her son a better life. She made it seem like they were only talking again to get a better custody arrangement, but then she showed up with her ex back at the apartment as Lip was putting their son to sleep, because he offered to babysit for free. The awkward encounter should have prompted Lip to figure out how to get comfortable with himself, but he couldn’t give up.

It waves there, gracefully flapping in the breeze. Old Glory is meeting morning glory, which likely wouldn’t be considered an unusual sight in almost any other yard in America. But this isn’t just any yard. It’s the Palazzo de Gallagher, and on these not-so-hollowed grounds it’s a bit unusual. But not really, at least not in 2017. As Carl says while looking straight at the camera, “America first, motherfuckers.” The Gallaghers are in the Trump era now. God help us.

Indeed, when any show reaches its eighth season, there is an understandable tension about how the series will reinvent itself or stay relevant after nearly a decade. When that package also promises total reprehensible behavior in its title, clearing that hurdle starts to appear intimidating. But luckily for Shameless, it is the season of the reprehensible in American life, and the series takes to 2017 with vigor and aplomb.
