The Flash Season 2 [blu-ray]

Although not quite as unique as season one with the introduction of the Reverse Flash, there are enough twists and turns to make the second season of “The Flash” worthwhile for fans of the series and it sets up season three for a solid season.

When we last left the Flash during season one, Eddie had helped vanquish the Reverse Flash but the result was the opening of a singularity over Central City. The Flash frantically tries to use his speed to close the singularity but it is the sacrifice of Firestorm that ultimately does the trick. Barry Allen now works alone in fear that he will put those who he cares about in danger.

The singularity has some lasting effects including opening a interdimenisonal holes between our world and an alternate universe and there are meta-humans and an evil speedster called Zoom that are coming through. Zoom wants the Flash’s speed just as he stole the speed of the alternate Earth’s Flash.

While elements of the second season were certainly redundant and recalled the first, there were enough changes to continue to make it interesting for most fans. As always, the cast give terrific performances and the tone of the show remains pitch perfect for the most part (although I found King-Shark a stretch). Certainly season two dragged towards the middle of the season (which I don’t think it was a problem with season one) the first half of season two and the last third will keep you engaged. The story arc of season two allows us to see elements of “The Flash of Two Worlds” comic (certainly the iconic cover of that comic book).

There’s also the issue of plot holes and unexplained mysteries from season two (and some that were glossed over–time remanent became the deus ex machina of the series). Having said that with the complex plotting of this season (like last) it sometimes overwhelmed the material.

Warner has given “The Flash: Season Two” an exceptionally good looking transfer. Audio is terrific throughout and is immersive.

I do wish that this set had the option to play the episodes continuously without the credits (as brief as they are) but it’s a minor annoyance. The set has plenty of special features 22 featurette a including the 2015 Paleyfest appearance, Comic-Con, behind-the-scenes creation of the visual effects, deleted scenes doe select episodes and a gag reel. I would have liked some commentary tracks on key episodes but I’m happy that we got as much as we did in the way of featurettes for the series. It’s a solid blu-ray release. There’s also a fold out booklet detailing each episode with a brief synopsis and which special features are on each disc. There’s also the cross over episodes for “The Arrow”.

We also get the Ultraviolet option for watching online. There is no iTunes option.

We also get subtitles in English, Spanish, French, Korean, Portugese, Danish, Finish, Norweign, Swedish and SDH. There’s also an ability to watch the first three episodes of season three the night after they air commercial free (this expires 11/14/16). The BD case comes in a cardboard holder.

Season two of “The Flash” maybe feel li,e season one redux but there are enough twists and turns to keep much of the season fresh and sets up the action for season three and the possibility of Crisis on Infinite Earths as a story arc.

I really enjoyed this season. I found the villain to actually be terrifying and the costume was amazing, blockbuster movie status. some parts of the series were slightly lacking (berry iris chemistry) however I do feel like it was intentional, maybe to demonstraight Iris’s sadness and or the fact that Berry loves her but isn’t obsessed and they really are best friends too. Cisco character played by carlos valdes really shined this season and brought the character to life for me. Before i viewed him as the smart behind the scenes supporting character and this season he really added a lot and made me laugh a good bit. I actually find Grant Gustin whom plays Berry to be a very good actor, there were two episodes i kinda wasn’t into but that’s not really his fualt. I actually find this show to be the best of the super hero series out right now, however sometimes some episodes are just pointless to me. I feel like it’s a CW thing to have some episodes that do nothing to propel the actual store line forward and it bugs me but all and all I really enjoyed this season, lots of depth to the main character and finally shows his full termoil he feels inside. Can’t wait for season three! it played perfectly with no issues, although I found it a bit over priced- lexi

One of the most brilliantly written and well acted programs to grace television in the past several years, The Flash combines the perfect earnestness of a World graced by Super Heroes and the tongue-in-cheek light heartedness to earn the respect and interest of viewers. While The Flash of the comic books has been an issue plagued Hero, The Flash of the television program has conveyed that aspect of the character without sacrificing his humanity. He becomes a regular everyman with daily problems of his own–his love life, his struggle with the proper use of his powers and the tragedy of the loss of his parents–that enables the viewer to identify with him as a Hero able to run faster than the sound barrier. Coupled with the help of his friends, The Flash is able to take on many super villians and defeat them while seeming to be just a man who is extraordinarily gifted and not a God whose powers defy his humanity. And it is this latter trait that keeps the show firmly grounded and ultimately entertaining.- Duane R.
