The Last Kingdom season 2

DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:

Uhtred is back, with more enemies than ever, and lots of political intrigue this time around. He has battles of a different kind as everyone suspects him, and just as what he wants most seems to be so close, his home of Bebbanburg, it all gets snatched away by treachery. He grows and matures in this season through his experiences; the irony is Alfred is the one who can’t see it because he is so obsessed with his idea of what it is to be a good man. Uhtred saves people this season more than slays them, but there is still enough fighting for fans to keep things interesting. The whole issue with Mercia too is quite interesting and one Uhtred gets caught up in through no fault of his own. Everyone tries to manipulate him and he tries to sort truth from lies. He also keeps 2 big secrets from Alfred, when he could create chaos by revealing them. Athelwold is as smarmy as ever, so we can be pretty sure who the real traitor is, and yet once again, he changes his mind about the path he is taken, but not before a lot of good people make huge sacrifices. His boast about wearing a clean tunic for a change made me laugh-as if that is why he deserves to be king now. Great TV, ad now I am miserable because I have to wait a whole year for another season. One minor quibble-Hild. She was in serious battles last year and was like Joan of Arc in a nun’s habit, so I am not sure why they made her all girlie with no ability to fight (with a sword) this time around when she was at Ethadun, and the idea sort of goes nowhere in the end and then she is not involved in the main action at all after a few shows even though she is such a strong character. But loved the new character additions Finan and Sihtric. Must see TV.

I honestly did not have particularly high hopes for this ‘Season Two’. Season One was fairly well-done, I thought, and I did enjoy it, but, WOW, it was far outshone by Season Two in every way.

I’ve read all of Cornwell’s “Uhtred” books, and I’ve loved them all. That said, my sympathies go out to anyone who would try to put all of that into any kind of TV “series”. To say the least, it is an immense story! But in Season Two, even with some necessary ‘compressions’ and a few omissions, the integrity of the overall story is rock-solid, believable, and thoroughly enjoyable. I was very surprised, and thoroughly delighted!

Now, I despair at the thought that we may have to wait two long, dreadful years before there’s a Season Three, but I certainly do hope there is one — now, more than ever. I’ll be eagerly awaiting it!

Season Two is even better than the first season and I hope that they continue to produce that excellent series. Good character development, fast paced story-line, well crafted production at every level. Some changes in the plot, but done with reason and in a manner that takes nothing away from the books on which the production is based. A rare treat and a creative victory for lovers of this wonderful series….and a successful translation from the written page to the screen.
