The Royals Season 2

DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:

After the tragic murder of King Simon (Vincent Regan) by an unknown assailant, Cyrus (Jake Maskall), Simon’s arrogant brother, has taken the throne with the help of Queen Helena (Elizabeth Hurley).

This show is fantastic. I don’t have cable, so I didn’t actually know about it until I randomly saw Elizabeth Hurley on a talk show promoting it. I immediately watched S1 on Prime, and coughed up the $20 to buy S2. Some things that should be noted if you are trying to decide whether or not to watch, consider this:

1) Don’t listen to the low reviewers who are giving it 1-3 Stars because it’s not “true to the UK”. Of *COURSE* it’s not “true to the UK. This show is on E!, not BBC or PBS. People watch this show to be entertained, not to learn how the monarchy really works.

2) The fun thing about this show is that it’s all made up. It isn’t true life or how the real “royals” really are. It’s actually a lot more sensationalized and more fun. There’s mystery, love, murder, scandal, intrigue – you won’t find any tea parties here. What’s even better about this is that it’s a non-reality show that doesn’t involve medical stuff, police, or firefighters. (Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely appreciate what all first-responders do, but I’m not interested enough to watch shows about them). The aspect of the royal family and all their made-up scandals makes it fun to watch.

3) The soundtrack to this show is AWESOME! I’ve come across some cool new artists that I wouldn’t have otherwise known about had it not been for this show. After every episode, I find myself Googling who the musical artists were so I can download more of their songs.

Things about this show that I’m not a fan of:
1) The whole “will they, or won’t they” with the Liam / Ophelia pairing. Ophelia is just boring. Sure, she’s pretty, but there’s nothing interesting about her character at all. The whole “common girl becomes a princess” storyline has been overdone SO MANY TIMES and is so predictable. Unfortunately, I don’t think her character will be going away any time soon, considering the happenings in the S2 finale. That’s too bad. In S1, I was really rooting for Gemma, but now that the actress who plays her has left the show (which is unfortunate, she did an amazing job as Gemma), I’ve been hoping Wilhelmina wins the heart of Liam. Wilhelmina has spunk and actual personality.

2) There are only 10 episodes per season. That makes me so sad 🙁

Surprisingly, being GEN X, I enjoy this TV series. However, the trashy GEN Y “virtue-signaling”,that is written into the dialogue, gets annoying. Until season two, I came to the conclusion that this TV show makes fun of the British royal family (which is ok) considering I’m American. As a viewer, I do get tired of some of the dialogue and find myself fast forwarding to the other character scenes. Season 1 and most of 2 were really good but Season 3 started to lose me. Lets hope the writers bring back to life some of the characters because the only one that is interesting is Jasper and “Len” with maybe the return of Robert. Also, I liked how dysfunctional the relationship was between Jasper and Len. In season 3, Jasper seems boring and weak. Liam’s character is too clean which gets boring too. So…not sure how Season 4 is going to measure up. Over time, the characters try to redeem themselves as better people when I found them more interesting when they were a hot mess. Princess Eleanor being drug free makes her uninteresting.. She was much more “colorful” when she was drug fueled and bitchy. The ONE THING I WISH THEY WOULD CHANGE IS the CONSTANT BACKGROUND MUSIC THAT COMPETES WITH THE ACTORS DIALOGUE!!!! PLEASE NIX IT! Please play instrumental music only and lower the volume!!!!

What a wonderful show: truly a great cast which. With the exception of Elizabeth Hurley, I never seen any of the other cast members before The Royals. But am enjoying them so immensely. Of course, it being fiction, should be viewed in that light. Perhaps that’s less easy for a Briton, I don’t know. But for me, it is a riveting story of fully developed characters, with flaws and triumphant assets both serving the storyline well. I adore the princess for her hard edge, snarky wit and sharp edges as much as I adore her soft heart and outstanding emotionally charged dialogue. I’ve always loved Elizabeth Hurley and this role allows her to show us a range she’s rarely been given the chance to show. I say bravo, Ms. Hurley. Well done. I could go on about Jasper, Liam, Cyrus and Robert as well as the secondary players. But instead of turning this review into a love letter (left in a book in the library of course) I’ll end by saying JUST WATCH IT. if you become addicted, worry not. I’m sure there will be a royals anon meeting coming to your area soon… lol.
