The Strain: Season 2 [Blu-ray]
DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:
Seriously. I thought the Walking Dead had that crown til I started with the Strain. Wow! I had read the book a couple years ago and absolutely LOVED it, OMG so good. One of the most terrifying and beautifully crafted vampire epics ever.
So when I saw it coming to TV I was cautiously hopeful and optimistic. I’m really picky about adaptations, especially when I loved the book so much. This has not let me down- it’s everything I could have imagined and then some. And it’s far beyond your garden-variety monster story.
I binge watched Season 1 (that was a very, very good day), and and now am painstakingly waiting for each episode along with everyone else. If it’s even possible S2 is scarier than S1. I can’t even watch this show without a blanket to hide my head under. I’m often practically shuddering and shivering by the time it ends. And the way they make that work is magic: the spooky sets, incredible costume, make up, CGI… The artful timing- I don’t even know how they do it. Please God, let there be a Season 3.-D. T. Douglas
The Strain Season 2 picks up where the first left off, but with the new season, it loses some of the motivation and tension that made the first season so effective and gripping. Thankfully, midseason, things get a lot more intriguing thanks to the newfound focus on the Master and Eichorst’s plans as well as the introduction of a new Daywalker who fights for his own unseen ambitions. Story threads involving Eph and Setrakian, the old warrior, are mostly followed through and tied up to the final episode, with the exception of some cliffhangers that can only be answered in season 3, which may possibly be the last season, as only ten episodes are planned compared to thirteen in the 1st and 2nd seasons. If you’re wondering if this is a show you’d be interested in, The Strain is very much about the decisions humans make when presented with greed or fighting against a greater evil, which is a recurring theme throughout the series. Additionally, if you have a tolerance for parasitic worms crawling beneath the skin that infest the human host and turn it into a obedient servant to the Master Vampire, this is the show for you, as there are many, gory examples of this in The Strain.-ThunderHawk
Well not as well done as the first season, this second season isn’t too bad. I did enjoy watching it. But season 2 deviated from the books heavily, now I understand that changes need to be made when you’re translating a written tale to the screen, as much as we avid readers might dislike it sometimes. I think those of us who understand that translating the essence from written word to screen just sometimes, well many times doesn’t work. Sometimes these translations work really well, other times they crash and burn. I personally feel that Season 2 is somewhere in the middle, while staying true to many things in the books, in some places it deviated heavily, such as in the ending of the Second Season.
Now I haven’t looked into the production of the show enough to know if this is because they are stretching things out into ultimately 4 seasons, but it felt to me from watching the first that they were going to be essentially adapting, one book to one season.
Overall, if you haven’t read the books, this isn’t going to matter much. But if you really dig the show, and haven’t read the books, please do, as in most cases, the book is better than the show, But I still have to give enough credit here, in saying that they have done a well above average job in the adaptation from page to screen. Worth Watching.-G. Ridgeway
