Vera Season 9

DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:

Each year I hold my breath that Brenda Blethyn will stay healthy enough to give us another series of these excellent mysteries. They give a nod to Vera/Brenda’s age this year, when they have the Detective Inspector nod off in the car while waiting for the forensic team to finish a murder scene. And young Healy does help her on with her ugly crime scene booties. I suppose she will retire from the Northumberland force some day – and then I’ll have to start rewatching previous seasons. “Vera” is not as brooding as “Shetland” and more grim than “Midsommer Murders” and a treat to watch.

Four episodes total 356 minutes, with English subtitles available. If you purchase the series on disc, there are no Bonus Features.

…. 1….”Blind Spot” Peter Lyle is running his huge mega-tractor-sized compactor over the mounds of garbage at the Denford Hill Landfill when he spots something. It’s a young woman, lying on a garbage hill in her red coat. Dead.
This was filmed at a real landfill, which is an amazing eyeful, but Denford Hill is a made-up name.
…. 2…. “Cuckoo” DCI Townley finds a hole in the fence surrounding Minchan’s Boatyard. He goes through and finds a trail of blood, ending in the body of a young man who just arrived on the train that day. He made enemies fast.
,,,, 3…. “Cold River” A cold river indeed. At least it is for Dani, a bridesmaid enjoying a party boat bachelorette before she falls off and drowns. Unless she didn’t – enjoy it or fall?
…. 4…. “The Seagull” We start off with a flashback to Whitley Bay, 1995. A young woman in a miniskirt and fake fur jacket leaves a disco crying. And that’s the last anybody sees of her until 2019, when a construction crew turns up a body, decayed down to a skeleton, in an abandoned drainage tunnel which once fed into the ocean. Except, wait a minute, the story is upended when the skeleton turns out to be male. Kenny: “Now there’s a ghost from the past.”
Vera, “Aye. I’m afraid he might have come back to haunt us.”
Whitley Bay is real, with sandy beaches and a lighthouse that turns into an island when the ocean tide is high.

Family dynamics play a big role in a couple of the episodes and in Vera’s life. Vera is a bulldog and tough as nails. And human.
