Westworld Season 1

DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:

WHAT IT’S ABOUT Westworld is a theme park where the very wealthy go to indulge their fantasies, which are either violent, sexual or both. The theme is the Wild West, and as far as patrons are concerned, when they step off that train, they step off into another century. The so-called “hosts” who inhabit this world are perfect cyborgs, made in a secret location, and programmed by Bernard Lowe (Jeffrey Wright). They each follow an elaborate “narrative” which is written by one of many authors who work in the bowels of Westworld, far out of sight of the guests. These narratives play out over and over again, in an endless loop cycle.

One day, Lowe notices — uh-oh — a possible glitch in a host, while Dr. Robert Ford (Anthony Hopkins) — who oversees the whole shebang — is puzzled by behavior in certain “recoded” hosts, notably one who quotes Shakespeare, specifically “Henry IV.” These hosts — programmed to talk and behave like people on the wild frontier, and to die violently when guests decide to off them — are not supposed to do that.

Pity your poor DVR. All overworked and overwhelmed. In this so-called era of “Peak TV,” when shows are multiplying like jackrabbits, it just can’t catch a break.

And it’s not getting any easier. Another fall television season is upon us, which means the broadcast and cable networks — along with the streamers — are about to bombard us with an insane amount of new programming. You simply don’t have enough time for it all.

That’s where we come in.

To help narrow your focus (and prevent your DVR from going on strike), we’ve painstakingly combed through the fall crop to uncover 10 new gems that appear to be extra see-worthy.

Keep in mind that in many cases we’ve viewed only pilot episodes. A strong pilot, of course, doesn’t guarantee sustained greatness. But at least it offers a measure of promise and hope.

Is Westworld really the new Game of Thrones? At least that’s the question being readily thrown around in the run up to HBO’s newest big-budget series. But in this remake of the 1973 sci-fi film, there’s little to connect the two – aside from ample evidence of HBO’s ongoing obsession with murder, nudity and sexual violence (where would high-quality drama be without those?).

The original Westworld was the first film by the novelist Michael Crichton, who would go on to create ER and write Jurassic Park. And his dystopia was one rich in potential for a longer screen adaptation.

The eponymous place is a theme park-cum-immersive theatre experience where rich people go to pretend they’re cowboys. The park is filled with a huge cast of immaculately made robots, or “hosts”, who stick to a series of recurring scripts that involve hundreds of intersecting storylines.
