The Kid Who Would Be King UK Region

DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:

Such a great message (morals and kindness and good defeating evil; gender, ethnic diversity; older kid/young adult fucus) but I would have treated it PG 13 because if the creepy, I would say “demonic” parts (underworld, skeletons come to life, a woman/demon who chants incantations to bring her evil minions up from the dead, same being turns into a fire breathing dragon trying to kill the kids, kids beheads dragon) but it was really well acted, humorous, great story that’s familiar but bright into modern times and dive WELL. both my kids and I loved it, but it was but much for my 7yo, who has no problem watching any other PG movie.

I knew going in that this was geared towards kids, and maybe I’m spoiled after seeing so many great animated movies like Zootopia, the Toy Story series, Monsters, Inc., etc – but where those movies were clever with some of the jokes aimed at adults & going right over the kid’s heads, this one is flat out condescending.

It’s bad enough that the movie doesn’t even try to be subtle when ‘educating you’ but then it just beats you over the head with the ‘message’ by explaining it to you, despite it being painfully obvious when it was actually happening. It’s also a go 30 – 40 minutes longer than it needed to be. If I saved just one person from wasting 2 hours of their life on this dreck I have done my duty as a good human. You have been warned.

This is a great retelling of the Arthur and Excalibur legend. Young Alex is bullied at school and lives with his mother. In an abandoned building site he finds the sword Excalibur and is able to pull it from the stone. Merlin comes back to assist him in his training. Merlin comes back as a teenager who with a very deft finger process is able to make magic, Patrick Stewart portrays the older Merlin. Morgana also comes back to life and wants to take over the world. Rebecca Ferguson is a very scary Morgana. Alex and his sidekick, persuade the 2 teens at his school who often bully him to assist him in his quest. I loved the sequences where they train his schoolmates to fight Morgana and the monsters who assist her. The special features are excellent. Scenes featuring Stonehenge and Tintagel were great. Very highly recommended and a welcome addition to my film library.
