Gentleman Jack Season 1 – UK Region

DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:

Love anything Sally Wainwright does…so as soon as I saw her name attached to this production, I was in. It’s terrific…but you must enjoy assertive, unapologetic women. Anne Lister is the antithesis of the sugar-sweet heroine. She’s all guts and vigor. And her clothes! It’s played a bit tongue-in-cheek, but just relax and go with it. The supporting characters are lots of fun, too. Seriousness does happen, but there’s plenty of good times to even it out into a delightful romp. Just set aside your prejudices and enjoy.

I would never miss Suranne in anything. This is just so brilliant, SHE is so brilliant, everyone is great, the directing, the costumes, the interiors, the writing, of course…A+ all the way. Sad to come to the end of this season. But the ending was soooo satisfying! And I must add: Suranne’s performance has definitely added to my own backbone. I find myself squeaking up ever so much more forthrightly, and putting more determination in my stride.

Halifax, Northern England early 1800s a fairly accurate recounting of the first modern open lesbian, Anne Lister. “Gentleman Jack” is how some locals referred to her. Gleaned mostly from her 7720 page diaries; about 1200 pages, written in an algebraic/Greek code deciphered in 1930, concern her romantic/sexual encounters. Her wealth was understated in the docudrama as she had many properties outside of her estate (Shibden Hall). The series spends most of it’s time on two aspects of her life – an affair w/Ann Walker & developing her coal assets. Note: Mentioned, and to be continued in part 2, is £2000 (about $290,000 in today’s dollars) to develop those assets which supposedly places her estate at risk, but seems trivial compared to her overall wealth. Would have liked to have seen more of people’s daily lives written in the dairies.
Such as:
“What am I? Every day I rise above it, the things people say. I walk into a room or down a street, and I see the way people look at me, and the things they say, and I rise above it, because I’ve trained myself to, not to see it or hear it until it’s become second nature to me, and I forget. Just how impossible it is for someone else to accept that. ”
