I first got hooked on this story a long time ago when I saw the movie with the lovely and taken way to soon from us Natasha Richardson. I thought it was really interesting and read the book. This version came out and was getting so much praise I was dying to see it, but I was trying to hold off for it to come out for free on Prime or maybe show up on Netflix since I don’t have a Hulu account (and don’t want one it tried the free trial and hated it). I wound up re-reading the book last summer on vacation, binge reading, couldn’t put it down, so I finally sucked it up and bought the series on Prime a couple of weeks ago. Loved it, loved how they gave back story that you don’t get from the book. They’ve made a few changes from the book it works and almost makes it better than the book in that sense. Now I just need season 2 to be added to Amazon!-Lovely Sox

No wonder this show was nominated for so many awards!
It’s unbelievable! If you love movies/books about the holocaust, slavery, and women’s rights, and period pieces set in the 1600’s (think Salem, Massachusetts for costumes, speech, and sets).
Now picture leadership by Old Testament men with their infertile submissive wives using fertile women (hand maidens) to grow their families. Disobedience in this society will cause you to lose an eye, hand, or discipline with a cattle prod!
These hand maidens may have been married (gay or straight), had children, and been successful in their jobs. Everything has been taken away from them. Their loved ones taken or murdered; think holocaust; Germany.
There’s an “underground railroad “ that is sometimes successful with Canada as the destination.
I watched all episodes from seasons 1-2 (season 2 has 2 episodes left), in 2 days!-kim Pedersen

Compelling,riveting, meaningful yet interesting, unusual, fascinating and thoughtful story line, excellent directing and writing, great costumes/clothing and setting, extremely well-acted (Elizabeth Moss is outstanding), could hardly stop watching. Can’t wait for next season’s DVD to come out. One of the best films I’ve ever seen, much better than most movies.- Avid reader
