Homeland: Season 7 – UK Region

DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:

At the end of last season, following an assassination attempt on her life, President Keane (Marvel) broke her promise to Carrie (Danes) by arresting 200 members of the intelligence community without bringing charges against them, including Saul Berenson (Patinkin). As season seven begins, Carrie has left her job in the White House and moved back to D.C. and is living with her sister Maggie (Amy Hargreaves) to take on the Keane administration and secure the release of the 200.

“Homeland“ is the latest TV drama to be directly touched by real world tensions. It begins its seventh season with as much intrigue, twists and bullets as its predecessors, but there is a different mood now lingering over its narrative. Like “Mr. Robot,” this is a series that began inspired by the headlines but is now actively chasing them. The season opener is a thriller at breakneck speed, but its grip (and crutch) comes from the fact that, as with so many other shows, the world has suddenly become so different from when the show first premiered.

The new season opens as Washington, D.C. reels from the aftermath of the assassination attempt on newly-elected president Elizabeth Keane (Elizabeth Marvel). Paranoid and rattled by the attempt, Keane has ordered sweeping arrests of those suspected to be involved in the attack. This has sparked wide, intense debate around the country and her senior aide David Wellington (Linus Roache), warns her that many are beginning to slam her as authoritarian (quite a few lines make references to Stalin). 200 members of the intelligence community have already been rounded up. Keane’s main target is General Jamie McClendon (Robert Knepper), who she is convinced is part of a military scheme to carry out a coup. In the shadows former CIA operative Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) is carrying out her own operation to work against Keane’s policies while trying to get to the bottom of the assassination attempt.

Homeland has always aimed for political relevancy. In its earliest seasons, the main character was haunted by the events of September 11th and our nation’s inability to prevent that terrorist attack. Now, in season 7, the show continues to offer timely and important stories about the consequences of fake news and how political divisions can lead to catastrophic consequences.

As season 6 ended, president-elect Elizabeth Keane (a superbly-cast Elizabeth Marvel) was nearly killed after military officials attempted a coup against the newly-elected and naive leader. Her frustrations with the intelligence community led to outright disdain and at the end of the season, her new government wrongly imprisoned hundreds of intelligence officers.

At the beginning of season 7, President Keane has been in office for two months and those officials are still being held by the government they once served.

Most of the captive officials are innocent but Keane’s zealous sense of righteousness has prevented her from seeing beyond her own biases. That has only made the reality on the ground worse as people have decided to rise up against her tyrannical methods.
