Murdoch Mysteries Season 11 [Blu-ray]
DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:
Here’s another eighteen great mysteries, set in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, starting late in the year 1904. In case you don’t remember, Season 10 ended with a cliffhanger and Detective William Murdoch arrested for murder! Not only that, but Brackenreid is a fugitive, Dr. Ogden is hiding from the bad guys and Sergeant Jackson was shot in a botched operation. Station 4 is in such disgrace that it is temporarily shut down. Though I liked all the episodes, I particularly recommend “The Accident” for its drama, “F.L.A.S.H.” for it’s imaginative, if improbable, way of killing someone, and “Game of Kings” for the best knight ever.
If you’ve watched “Murdoch Mysteries” before, you know that one of its hallmarks is bringing in real people and real inventions or discoveries from the time period. My episode synopses are brief, but I’ve tried to point out the “Real” and “New” that I noticed. My list is probably incomplete, so leave a comment to tell me what I missed! Also, running throughout Season 11 is the possibility of Dr. Ogden and Murdoch starting a family. And Murdoch’s closely held religious beliefs also play a more prominent role than usual.
Season 19 of “Murdoch Mysteries” runs a total of 790 minutes. That’s a LOT of mystery enjoyment. English subtitles are available on the episodes and on the Bonus Features. As you can see by the short length of this year’s bonuses, they were mainly like TV trailers/teasers. To save some space, I’ve entered them as a comment to this review.
EPISODES:
…1… “Up From Ashes” Dastardly deeds by dastardly men.
…2… “Merlot Murders” Enrico Firenzo started from nothing to become a Toronto mover & shaker. Today, his beautiful mansion is being used for his son’s wedding. At the reception, Enrico opens a special bottle of wine to toast the newlyweds. He uncorks it, raises the glass to his mouth, swallows, and falls over dead.
…3… “Footsteps” In honor of very special guests, a dinner for 17 people is held where all lights will be extinguished while they’re eating. Unfortunately, this means no one sees when a guest at the table is stabbed during dinner. REAL: Alexander Graham Bell and his wife, Mabel, Miss Helen Keller and Mrs. Ann Sullivan Macy. NEW: Bell’s invention, the Graphizer.
…4… “The Canadian Patient” Dr. Ogden and Murdoch wouldn’t miss the Toronto Medical Exposition. Even if it gets them embroiled in the question of whether or not a kidney transplant should be attempted. REAL: Mary Baker Eddy. NEW: Isolated Accessory Food Factors = Vital amines, and the discovery that aspirin is an anticoagulant.
…5… “Dr. Osler Regrets” The Murdochs are having dinner with Dr. Osler, who speaks on the stigma of aging. A man bursts in and accuses the Osler of inducing his father’s suicide with his talk of the horrors of growing old. Except it turns out it wasn’t suicide. REAL: Dr. William Osler, who became one of the founders of Johns Hopkins Hospital.
…6… “Murdoch Street” Two worried parents turn at Station 4. Their two sons attended the exclusive college prep high school, Laird College. At least, they were attending, because they disappeared two weeks before. Constable Brackenreid, son of the Detective, is sent in under cover.
…7… “The Accident” It’s a busy morning at a busy intersection, pedestrians, cars, horses and street cars all vying for room. Crabtree, Watts and Murdoch are so busy talking about the possible dangers of robots that they miss seeing the genial Mr. Dilbert pinned by a runaway automobile. A terrible accident. Unless it isn’t.
