Orange Is the New Black Season 1-4 UK Region

This show is not for everyone. Vulgarity is constant. Sexuality is on full display. There is occasional very graphic violence. The show is at times gritty. Orange Is The New Black (OITNB) has often made me feel uncomfortable, but I suspect that is part of the goal.

Based on a true story, initially the show focuses on Piper Chapman at the start of a brief prison term for the one drug-related offense she committed in her youth over a decade ago. But as we get to know the other occupants of Litchfield, bland blonde Piper becomes by far the least interesting part of the show. Most of the women are POCs, with the occasional white hillbilly, stalker, or murderer thrown into the mix.

Each episode showcases one character’s backstory. There is a message to this show. Why on earth is hispanic Gloria, good mother of two, in prison for a fairly minor food stamp offense? This is a question we are forced to ask ourselves over and over again, particularly about Suzanne. And in asking ourselves this question, we begin to question what is going on in our real world prison system and who exactly we are incarcerating.
