Outlander: Season 1-3 – UK Region

DVD Wholesale Quick Overview:

One of the most significant details of Outlander is that it was developed by Ronald D. Moore. Following years of work on the Star Trek franchise, Ronald D. Moore created the Battlestar Galactica reboot. That should tell you that Outlander, at its core a love story between a time traveling nurse from mid-twentieth century England and a hot eighteenth century Scottish highlander, is edgier than its premise would imply. Towards the end of the first season there were two episodes which were quite possibly the most challenging that I have ever sat through; the violence depicted was not merely physical but also psychological.

At its worst, Outlander provided some truly awful television. There was one episode about Claire singing her way through the Scottish countryside while searching for Jamie that was truly horrific, taking boredom to a whole new level. But at its best, Outlander is griping, compelling, and seriously bingeworthy. In other words, the show is somewhat uneven, but very much worth watching. It is also worth rewatching, and that’s really saying something.

It is worth noting that our heroine gets around. Not only do we see Claire in 1900s England and Boston, but Jamie and Claire do not just stay put, surrounded by a core cast. While a large part of Outlander does take place in Scotland, our leads also venture to France and ultimately to the New World, settling in North Carolina. I found this a bit disconcerting at first, as if the show had changed character on me, but ultimately the show works. Of course, since the showrunners were reliant upon the source material, they did have to follow Claire and Jamie’s adventures as told by Diane Gabaldon in her Outlander novels. And they did so very well. This is not merely a chick flick (television version); it has much broader appeal.
