The Deuce Season 1 -UK Region

If you watched The Wire and or Treme, then you know to expect a superb script from these two writers. If you didn’t watch these HBO series then you should and judging by season one I would say the same for this series. As usual, HBO releases a top notch blu ray video with season one. This is New York City in the Seventies and season one indicates that they have captured it precisely as it was then, both the city and the era. Much like The Wire you can see that the series is set to chase crime and corruption in multiple directions, down dark alleys, into city hall, government agencies, police departments and of course the media. Like the Wire you can expect the media to play a significant role due to Somon’s background as a reporter. Drastic changes were set to take place in the immediate future in 1971 at the beginning of this series, some good, some not so good, a lot depending on your outlook. You can count on it all being captured with these experienced writers. The acting and direction in season one was spot on, no deficiencies in any character. A lot is said about the sex and nudity in this season, and it is there, as is necessary for the story to have any viability for reality. I did not find it much if any worse than a lot of other shows and movies where it had less viability. I can say that for me it was just part of the story, no more or less. As tasteful as it could be considering the seediness of the place and time.- Carl Johnson

Great authentic gritty feel, beautiful actresses, great sets. You feel for the actresses characters, hoping they will get out. Only downside to this series is it has two James Franco’s.- William E King II

Its a bit down and dirty… a look at dog eared hookers, pimps, massage parlors, porn movies…. crummy run down bars…. crime bosses, bartenders…. almost too realistic a look at the sleezy underside of our society circa 1970… a few of the girls are gorgeous, Glendynhal especially…. some more realistically rough looking… but everybody can act… and the cops are realistic talking in their squad cars about whether to take the bribes or try to stay clean…. which is more dangerous….all the while James Franco has to try and get rich before he gets whacked or thrown in prison.- Chris B.
